Google Music Update Adds Expandable Jelly Bean Notifications

Google Music has been updated that ads a few new features to many users. This update includes:

v4.3.609
* Bug fixes and support for Google TV devices.* Expandable notifications in Jellybean.

For those who have forgotten about expandable notifications here is a reminder. When an app supports expandable notifications and you see the notification in menu you place two fingers on it and pull down to see more options.

As you see to the left it gives you a bigger thumbnail and an option to go to the previous song. While it doesn't add a ton of new options, it does give you a nice notification widget to look at. This is the first Jelly Bean notification I have actually used and it really ads a nice touch to the OS.

For many of you this feature is not available since Jelly Bean is no where on the rader to be available for your device.

App How To: Pinterest for Android

In this video I take a quick look at the newly released Pinterest App for Android. The app is fully funcional and is very easy to use. Once you have logged in or created your Pinterest account it will take you to the main page that shows the pins of all the people that you are following.

At the top of the page you can create a pin by selecting the button and then taking a picture of choosing a photo from you gallery.

You can scroll through all the pins on the main page and repin, like, or comment on a pin just by tapping on the picture. When you have selected a pin you can also click the menu button and you can download the picture to your device or you can share it with other social networks.

Back on the homescreen you can also swipe left to browse through the many different categories or you can swipe right to view your profile as well as news and see your followers and those you follow.

RePinning something from the web is where Android really has the advantage over other mobile operating systems. When you are using the web browser and you find something ou would like to Pin, all you need to do is press Menu, and then Share. You will then see the option to choose Pinterest as shown at the left.

Once you select Pinterest it will then pull up all of the images from the page for you to select. You can then choose one and name the pin as well as choose what board you would like it on.

For an initial release of this app Pinterest has done an excellent job. I found the app to run very smooth and load images quickly. I would suggest being on Wi-Fi or LTE if you are going to do some heaving browsing and pinning.

Is The Verge's Galaxy Note 10.1 Unit Broken?

Today Samsung announced its next member of the Galaxy Note Family. The Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with a Wacom-powered S Pen that allows for touch sensitive stylus tablet experience. The tablet has a 1.4Ghz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. It will be available tomorrow with the 16GB costing $499 and the 32GB model at $549.

The Verge reviewed the new device and while it is highly specked it received very low scores. In the video review it shows that tablet has a bit of lag just scrolling through home screens but the problem is very evident when opening up multiscreen apps. This allows you to use two specific Samsung apps in split screen mode. When switching from one app to the other there is almost a 2 second delay before the app begins to respond.

In a 3rd generation iPad world is sad to see so many devices struggle to match its quality. The Galaxy Note's screen is nowhere near the Retina Display of the iPad and it is still struggling to keep its performance up. While many have suggested it is simply a bad review unit it really is making Samsung look bad.

Is the interface and multiscreen ability enough for you to see pass the lag and purchase the tablet?

Pinterest introduces app for Android, iPad and iPhone

After a very long wait Pinterest has finally released a Android app and a iPad app. The Android app will work on  phones and tablets alike. They have also updated the iPhone that allows you to see more pins at once. Being able to Like, Comment, and Repin is a breeze in the new speedy app. You can easily login with your email address, Facebook, or Twitter account. If you own a Kindle Fire the app will now available in the Amazon App Store.

Check out Pinterest's App page to download the app now!

Phones and tablets are really the perfect devices to browse the web on the go. In this tutorial I shows you how you can add a website shortcut icon to the main screen on any Android device so you can quickly jump to your favorite site. If you would like to make a icon for your own website or blog, watch a tutorial here to learn how. The great things is that if you create a icon for your iPad, the icon is then made available on any iOS or Android device when you create a bookmark.

Editorial: Are We Really Multitasking?

In the beginning of the fight between smart phone vs. smart phone and tablet vs. tablet, there was a great desire from consumers to be able to multitask like they could on a desktop PC. On a PC you have the option to have many different windows open, this allows you to be able to run and see multiple programs at the same time.

With the PC style of multitasking it allows you to be listening to music in the background or easily switch from a game to using the web. One of the most common forms is having a dual screen computer. This allows you to see multiple programs at once so you don't have to continually change between them while you copy information from one program to the other.

Many of the current Mobile OS platforms have elements of multitasking built in but it seems that they are still far from what we really need. From the beginning of the iPhone you could open up iPod and start your music, then you could switch to view your Calender or messaging very easily while still listening to your music. This is great but let everyone longing for more.

Now the iOS allows you to do this with all apps. You simply press the home button twice to open up the most recent apps so that you can switch from one to the other only running certain tasks like music and or location based services in the background and pausing the rest of the processing. On Android it is a similar way of doing things. When you leave an app it will keep the spot where you just were. You can then hold the home button and a list of recent apps will appear and you can then switch back to where you previously were. Android is known for running many computing tasks in the background to keep all widgets and services up to date with the greatest information.

Yes these process would fall in the line of actual multitasking, but is that what we truly are doing? Right now, look at your computer screen and see how many different windows you have open. Is there just one or are there multiple? Do you spend your time only doing one thing or is there a web browser open on one side of the screen and Word open on the other? These processes are what makes a computer so great. With this we can do much more than what a simple piece of paper could ever do for us.

On the mobile OS this is something that is still yet to be done. Recently Microsoft put out a demo of upcoming features of Windows 8 for touch screens that gives the ability to do this type of computing on a touch screen. There are certain apps right now such as Twitter on the iPad that allow you to view your stream and click on a link to open a new panel where the browser opens so you can still see your stream and view a web page at the same time. This would be great to have in tablets because of the amount of real-estate.

When Honeycomb came out I thought about what would be the one feature that I would love to have on it that iOS did not have. I thought it would be great if you were able to open two Android apps at the same time and use them simultaneously. The possibilities of combinations of apps could be anything. Maybe you want to check your bank account transactions and want to update a budget at the same time but don't want to keep switching back and forth between the apps because it is hard to remember the detailed information. Maybe you a browsing Facebook but want to be playing a casual game of Cut the Rope at the same time.

From what i have learned this is not possible yet on any available mobile OS. I have not been able to find any apps that allow you to open two specific apps at the same time. The ability to do this maybe based on the processor but this definitely needs to be put down on the Need to put in the next OS update list.

Google+ Profiles Showing Up in Android Contacts

Today when I was going through my contacts on my Android phone I noticed that there was a new field that had not been there before. On some contacts there is only one field added and on others there are two. If you haven't heard, Google has opened up a field test of its new social networking feature called Google+. Part of this allows you to add your contacts into Circles so that you can filter to just the posts you want to read or friends you just want to contact.

There is very well going to be deep integration of Google+ into the Android OS. The Google+ app allows you to post to Circles, post pictures from your phone and check into places.

Under my Tablet in a Minute contact I had two links show up. A Google Profile link and a Google+ Profile link. Since that profile is in my Circle, that may be why it is showing up. I check other contacts who have joined Google+ and it is showing up on theirs as well. I also checked contacts that I have put in my Circles but they are not a part of Google+ and they had no link.

I think that this makes for great integration to easily be able to go to a friend or family member's profile to see their posts and info very quickly.
